Privacy Policy
How Black Box handles your information. Plain language, no tracking, no advertising, designed to keep protection data on your device.
What Black Box does
Black Box is a privacy and network-protection app for Android. It uses Android's local VPN system to help apply your protection rules, such as Lockdown Mode, and shows you a record of protection activity on your device. Black Box is designed to process protection activity locally on the phone. It does not operate a VPN server for user traffic, and it does not send your network traffic to Black Box servers.
Data processed on your device
To do its job, Black Box keeps a small amount of information in the app's private storage on your device:
- Local connection metadata such as app name, hostname, port, and the protection decision (allowed or blocked).
- Local protection records used to render Protection Activity and Privacy Timeline.
- App settings and the local notification preferences you choose.
- Onboarding state, so the setup steps don't repeat after you finish them.
All of this stays on your device. You can export or delete it from the Privacy screen inside the app at any time.
Data Black Box does not collect
Black Box is designed not to collect, store, transmit, or share the following:
- VPN traffic. Black Box does not receive or store your VPN traffic.
- Browsing history. Black Box does not receive or store your browsing history.
- App activity logs. Black Box does not receive or store generic app activity logs.
- Permission history. Black Box does not receive or store records of which apps used which permissions on the Google Play build.
- Page contents, request bodies, response bodies, full URLs, message contents, contact details, photo, video, or audio media content.
- Login credentials, OAuth tokens, or payment card numbers.
- Advertising identifiers. Black Box does not use advertising tracking.
Black Box does not sell user data. Black Box does not use analytics or tracking cookies on this website.
VPN protection
Black Box uses Android's local VPN system to apply your protection rules. The protection runs on your device. Black Box does not operate a VPN server for user traffic, and your network traffic is not forwarded to Black Box servers. Page contents are not read; the app only records the hostname, port, decision, and byte counts needed to render Protection Activity.
Before the Android system VPN-permission prompt appears, Black Box shows an in-app Local VPN protection explanation so you can decide whether to allow it. You can turn Lockdown Mode off at any time from the Dashboard or the Lockdown screen.
Notifications
Black Box can show local notifications: an ongoing notification while Lockdown Mode is on, alerts for protection events, and an optional daily Protection summary. Notifications are generated on your device and are not delivered through Black Box-controlled servers. The daily summary notification is off by default; you can turn it on or off in Settings.
Payments and subscriptions
The current Google Play build does not require login and does not require payment. If subscriptions are added in a future release, the payment will be handled by the app store or payment provider (for example Google Play Billing on Android, or Apple In-App Purchase on iOS), and this Privacy Policy will be updated before any payment is taken. Black Box does not store payment card numbers itself.
Children's privacy
Black Box is not directed to children under 13. The app's target audience is adults. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The "Last updated" date at the top of the page will change to reflect the most recent revision. If the change is material, we will note the change clearly inside the app or on this page before it takes effect.
